Senior Accountant

Reports to: Accounting Manager

General Description:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing clients’ financial statements, tax returns and complying with clients’ statutory filing requirements.  In addition this position is responsible for the development and implementation of procedures and supervising the intermediate accountant and junior accounting technical staff.

Major Tasks and Duties:

  • Make arrangements with prior auditor/accountant to review files/working papers
  • Prepare audit/ review/ compilation plans and update ongoing clients
  • Review and analyze client internal control
  • Train clients on accounting software and the accounting process
  • Supervise and perform field work for audits,  reviews and compilations
  • Prepare year end financial statements and related working papers for audits, reviews and compilations
  • Prepare Corporate and Personal income tax returns, trust, not for profit and other information returns and schedules
  • Perform follow up with clients and Canada Revenue Agency
  • Income tax research and other partner support
  • Prepare transmittal documentation
  • Training and supervision of junior and intermediate accounting staff
  • Draft portions of management letters
  • Counsel and mentor intermediate staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience:


  • Completion of at least five levels of the Certified General Accountants Association program of studies, or an equivalent recognized accounting program at a community college or university


  • Minimum of one year experience in public practice accounting

Knowledge and skills

  • Basic working knowledge of the CICA Handbook
  • Basic working knowledge of the Canadian Income Tax Act
  • Basic working knowledge of the CGA Public Practice Manual
  • Basic working knowledge of Federal and Provincial legislation

Information Technology

  • Above average  working knowledge of computers and their operations
  • Indepth knowledge of working paper software programs such as Caseware
  • In depth knowledge of accounting programs such as Simply Accounting and Quickbooks
  • Excellent working knowledge of other software programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word
